Machining GLARE fibre metal laminates: a comparative study on drilling effect between conventional and ultrasonic-assisted drilling

چکیده

Abstract GLARE laminates are multi-layered metal-composite materials created from bonding sheets of metallic alloys with carbon or glass fibre layers. The application hybrid-conventional machining processes such as ultrasonic-assisted drilling (UAD) is becoming great interest to the aerospace industry due its capability in reducing cutting forces and tool wear which directly responsible for drilling-induced delamination. There rich literature on conventional (CD) GLARE, but no work reported using UAD process. This study will fill this gap investigate an indigenously developed system. influence spindle speed feed rate thrust force surface roughness metrics ( R a z ) were investigated under CD regimes. quality borehole damage mechanisms laminate constituents was examined scanning electron microscopy (SEM). contribution parameters measured outputs further evaluated analysis variance (ANOVA) statistical analysis. It found that resulted significant reduction by up 65% while unaffected type process used. SEM showed irregular fuzzier surfaces layers holes machined longitudinal vibration tool.

Drilling of carbon fibre reinforced laminates – a study

The distinguishing characteristics of carbon fibre reinforced laminates, like low weight, high strength or stiffness, had resulted in an increase of their use during the last decades. Although parts are normally produced to “near-net” shape, machining operations like drilling are still needed. In result of composites non-homogeneity, this operation can lead to delamination, considered the most ...

Effect of chisel edge in ultrasonic assisted drilling of carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP)

Ultrasonic assisted drilling (UAD) has been reported effective for thrust force reduction during drilling of CFRP resulting in lower exit delamination. However, this process is not fully understood in relation to machining theory. This work focused on understanding the separate effects of chisel and cutting edges during UAD in comparison with conventional drilling (CD). Experiments were perform...

ultrasonic assisted drilling of bone

ultrasonic assisted drilling (usd) is new technique to drill difficult to machine materials. in this method, tool or workpiece vibrates with amplitude of few microns in addition to conventional drill bite rotation. in this experimental research, the bone was drilled both conventionally and using uad, then the thrust was measured in two methods at feed rates of 50, 75 and 125 mm/s and 500, 710 a...

Tool Effects on Hybrid Laminates Drilling

Fibre reinforced plastics are increasing their importance as one of the most interesting groups of material on account of their low weight, high strength and stiffness. To obtain good quality holes, it is important to identify the type of material, ply stacking sequence and fibre orientation. In this paper, the drilling of quasi-isotropic hybrid carbon+glass/epoxy plates is analyzed. Two commer...
